Section 1 · 15 questions
About You
Every bank, super fund and government office asks for these first. They are also what families spend the longest hunting for.
- What is your full legal name, as it appears on your passport or birth certificate?
- Have you ever been known by another name?
- Where were you born?
- Where do you keep your birth certificate?
Section 2 · 11 questions
Your People
In the first few hours somebody has to make phone calls. This decides who, so nobody has to guess.
- Who should be told first?
- Who is the calm-in-a-crisis person who could coordinate things?
- Is there anyone who should be told personally, before it appears on Facebook?
- Is anyone difficult to reach?
Section 3 · 12 questions
Everyday Money
Not account numbers — which institutions to contact, and which payments must keep running so the household doesn’t fall over.
- Which banks do you have accounts with today?
- Ever opened an account for a bonus rate or a home-loan offset and forgotten it?
- An account from childhood, or from a previous state or town?
- Any joint accounts? Who with?
Section 4 · 11 questions
Super & Life Insurance
The section that surprises almost everyone. Most default super accounts include life insurance nobody remembers signing up for.
- Which super fund receives your employer contributions now?
- List every employer you can remember. Did any use a different fund?
- Did you ever work overseas? Any pension or scheme there?
- Did you get a chance to check?
Section 5 · 7 questions
Insurance & Protection
Some of these refund money when cancelled promptly. Others must stay running. The folder says which is which.
- Who insures your home and contents?
- Car insurance — which insurer, and which vehicles?
- Is there private health insurance?
- Is there funeral insurance or a funeral bond?
Section 6 · 14 questions
Investments & Property
Including forgotten share parcels from the old demutualisations — AMP, Telstra, NRMA — that millions of Australians still hold.
- Do you own or part-own property?
- Do you own shares?
- Any parcels from the old demutualisations or floats?
- Employee share schemes from any past employer?
Section 7 · 10 questions
Debts & Obligations
Recorded so nobody is blindsided, and so nobody pays something the estate should have covered.
- Mortgages — which lender, and where can the balance be seen?
- Credit cards — which institutions?
- Car loans, personal loans, or a HECS/HELP debt?
- Any buy-now-pay-later accounts?
Section 8 · 13 questions
Your Digital Life
Email is the master key. Everything else can be reset from it, which is exactly why nobody gets anywhere without it.
- What are your main email addresses?
- Where are the access instructions?
- Do you use a password manager?
- Apple or Android?
Section 9 · 10 questions
Your Wishes
Where the real documents are, and what you’d want. Guidance for your family, not a legal instruction.
- Do you have a will?
- Is there an Enduring Power of Attorney or Advance Care Directive?
- Are you registered on the Australian Organ Donor Register?
- Burial, cremation, or something else?
